Every live sound system is the same story: capture β carry β control β amplify β deliver. A $5,000 console cannot fix a badly placed $100 microphone, and a perfect mix dies in a bad speaker. Fix problems at the earliest stage they appear.
π Gain Staging & Unity
Set the gain (trim) so the loudest moment of the source sits just below clipping at the preamp β that's your headroom. Then leave the fader near unity (0 dB), where the console neither boosts nor cuts. Mixing happens with faders; gain is set once and left alone.
Golden rule: if the preamp clips, no fader below it can undo the damage. Distortion recorded at the first stage travels through every stage after it.
π£ Why Clipping Sounds Awful
An audio signal is a smooth wave. When a stage runs out of voltage to describe the wave's peaks, it flattens them β literally slicing the tops off. Those squared-off edges add harsh new frequencies that were never in the singer's voice. Once clipped, the wave can't be un-flattened.
π Feedback in 10 Seconds
Feedback is a loop: the mic hears the speaker, the speaker replays the mic, and one frequency snowballs into a howl. Break the loop by moving the mic behind the speakers, pointing it away from them, or cutting the ringing frequency on the EQ. Turning everything down is the last resort, not the first.
