Master the bandsaw from blade selection to freehand curves, then unleash it as a creative tool — carving fish, animals, characters, and imaginative sculptures from a single block of wood.
01 — How a Bandsaw Works
A Continuous Blade on Wheels
Unlike a circular saw (which spins) or a jigsaw (which strokes up and down), a bandsaw uses a long, thin, continuous loop of blade stretched between two rubber-coated wheels. The motor spins those wheels, pulling the blade downward through the table at a steady speed — giving you smooth, controlled cuts with very little vibration.
The blade is narrow (usually 1/8″ to 1″ wide), which means it can follow tight curves that no other stationary saw can match. That's what makes the bandsaw the most creative tool in the wood shop.

A welded steel loop with teeth on one edge. Width controls minimum curve radius; TPI (teeth per inch) controls cut smoothness. Narrow blades cut tight curves; wide blades cut straighter and deeper.
Kerf

The width of material removed by a blade cut. Bandsaw kerfs are narrow (1/16″–1/8″), allowing precise cuts and thin slices. Always account for kerf when measuring parts — the cut removes material.
TPI

Higher TPI = finer, smoother cut but slower. Lower TPI = faster cut, rougher surface. 3–6 TPI for ripping thick wood; 10–14 TPI for thin stock or curves; 18+ TPI for ultra-smooth finish cuts.
Blade Guides

Upper and lower guide assemblies stabilize the blade side-to-side and front-to-back. Proper guide adjustment prevents blade wander, reduces heat, and extends blade life. Always set the upper guide 1/4″ above your workpiece.
Drift

Blades naturally pull at a slight angle called drift — not every blade cuts perfectly straight with the fence. To use a fence accurately, first cut a straight freehand line, note the drift angle, then angle your fence to match it.
Relief Cut

A straight cut made before a tight curve so waste wood can fall away and the blade won't bind. Always plan relief cuts when cutting sharp internal curves — they are your best friend for animal shapes and tight contours.
02 — Safety Rules
Non-Negotiable Shop Rules
PPE First, Always
Safety glasses are mandatory before the power switch is even touched. Long hair must be tied back; loose sleeves rolled up. Gloves are NOT recommended — fabric can catch on the blade.
Set the Upper Guide
Lower the upper blade guide so it sits no more than 1/4″ above your workpiece. Exposed blade is a hazard — if you can see 6 inches of blade, you need to adjust.
Check the Table
Before cutting, confirm the table is locked at the correct angle (usually 90°). A loose table can shift mid-cut. Bump the table with your fist — if it moves, lock it down.
Stand to the Side
Position yourself slightly to the side of the blade line, not directly behind the workpiece. If a blade snaps (rare but possible), you don't want to be in its path.
Let the Saw Do the Work
Feed wood gently into the blade — never force or push hard. The blade will cut at its own pace. Forcing creates heat, dulls teeth, and can cause the blade to wander or snap.
No Backing Up with Blade Running
Once you start a cut, complete it or turn off the saw before pulling the workpiece back. Backing up while running can pull the blade off the wheels.
Keep Fingers Clear
Maintain at least 3 inches between your fingers and the blade at all times. For small pieces, use a push stick. No exceptions — the blade cannot tell the difference between wood and skin.
One Operator at a Time
Only the person cutting stands at the machine. Bystanders must stay back. Distractions while operating a bandsaw can be dangerous — conversations happen after the saw is off.
Inspect the Blade
Before use, check that the blade is properly tensioned and has no cracks or missing teeth. A damaged blade can snap. Report any problems to the teacher before cutting.
03 — Choosing the Right Blade
Match the Blade to the Job
The blade you choose determines what's possible. Wide blades go straight and handle thick stock; narrow blades follow curves. TPI determines smoothness vs. speed.

04 — Cutting Techniques
Five Core Bandsaw Moves
Using the Rip Fence
The rip fence is a guide that keeps your workpiece a fixed distance from the blade for parallel cuts. Because of blade drift, you may need to angle the fence slightly.
- Set fence to desired width
- Hold workpiece firmly against fence
- Feed smoothly — never jerk
- Use a push stick for the last 6 inches
Using the Miter Gauge
For crosscuts (cutting across the grain) at 90° or a custom angle, the miter gauge rides in the table's miter slot and guides the workpiece perpendicularly.
- Set miter gauge to 90° (or desired angle)
- Clamp or hold workpiece firmly against it
- Push both gauge and workpiece forward together
- Never use fence and miter gauge simultaneously
Turning While Cutting
Freehand curves are the bandsaw's superpower. The blade is thin enough to follow a drawn pencil line. The key skill is smooth, continuous turning — no stopping, no jerking.
- Draw your shape on the wood first (always)
- Plan your entry point — usually outside a corner
- Turn the wood gradually while feeding forward
- For tight curves, slow your feed rate
- Keep your eye on the line, not the blade
Minimum Radius Rule
Every blade has a tightest curve it can follow without binding. If your design has curves tighter than your blade allows, either switch to a narrower blade or use relief cuts.
- Test minimum radius on scrap before cutting your piece
- If the blade binds, back off and come in from a different angle
- Multiple straight cuts can approximate a tight curve (faceting)
- Sand or rasp facets smooth after cutting
What is a Relief Cut?
A relief cut is a straight cut made into a curve before you cut the curve itself. It lets waste material fall away so the blade doesn't get trapped in the kerf.
- Identify any curves tighter than your blade radius
- Cut straight into the waste side up to (but not past) the curve
- When you reach the curve, the waste drops free
- Now the curve cut is free to complete
Multi-Cut Strategy for Animals
Complex shapes (fish tails, bird wings, character hair) often need 3–5 relief cuts before the final outline cut. Plan these before starting.
- Sketch relief cuts in a different color pencil on your pattern
- Always make relief cuts before outline cuts
- Cut from the outside in, leaving final shape for last
- Think of each relief cut as removing one obstacle at a time
Resawing — Slicing Thick into Thin
Resawing means cutting a thick board through its thickness to make thinner slabs. It's how you get the thin blanks needed for flat animal cutouts and layered sculpture.
- Use a wide blade (3/8″–1/2″) and low TPI (3–4)
- Use the fence (with drift compensation)
- Feed slowly and steadily — this is the hardest cut on the saw
- Let the saw cool between long cuts if needed
Bookmatching
Resaw a single board and open both halves like a book — they'll be mirror images of each other. Great for making symmetrical animal faces or wing pairs.
- Resaw one board into two thin slabs
- Open them like a book — the grain mirrors perfectly
- Glue both pieces to a backing, grain facing out
- Cut the animal/character outline through both layers
Stack Cutting
Tape or clamp multiple thin boards together and cut them all at once. Every board comes out identical — great for making a classroom set of fish or a herd of animals.
- Stack boards with double-sided tape between layers
- Total stack height shouldn't exceed your blade guide range
- Draw pattern on top board only
- Cut slowly — you're moving more mass
When to Stack Cut
Stack cutting is most useful when you need multiples of the same shape — a fleet of fish for an aquarium display, identical character tokens for a board game, or wings for a mobile.
- Use 1/8″–1/4″ thick boards for best results
- Re-check tape bond mid-stack if boards feel loose
- Sand each piece individually after separating
- Label the top piece so you don't lose your pattern

05 — Creative Projects
From Blank to Masterpiece
The bandsaw is one of the most artistic tools in the shop. Once you know the rules, you can make virtually anything. Here are six projects ranging from beginner to advanced — each teaches a core skill and results in something you'll want to keep.
Bandsaw Fish
Cut a flat fish silhouette, then use a rasp and sandpaper to give it body. Add painted scales, goggle eyes, and hang it from fishing line. A perfect first bandsaw project — mostly straight cuts with one gentle tail curve.
- Print or draw a fish template (6–8″ long)
- Transfer to 3/4″ pine with carbon paper or spray glue
- Rough-cut the outline with a 1/4″ blade
- Refine details (tail, fins) with 1/8″ blade
- Rasp and sand to round the edges
- Paint, seal, add eye and hanging hook
3D Animal Sculpture
Make a fully three-dimensional animal using the "two-view" method: cut the side profile, then rotate 90° and cut the top profile. The two intersecting cuts leave a surprisingly lifelike 3D creature.
- Choose an animal — frogs, bears, and birds work well
- Draw side view on one face of a square block
- Make side cuts, tape waste back on temporarily
- Draw top view on the top face
- Make top cuts — waste falls away revealing the 3D form
- Rasp, carve, sand, and paint to finish
Character Puzzle
Design your own original character — robot, alien, superhero, monster — then cut it out of 1/2″ plywood. The pieces of the cut-away waste become puzzle pieces that fit back into the character outline.
- Design character with bold, simple shapes (avoid tiny details)
- Draw directly on plywood with marker
- Cut character outline — save ALL waste pieces
- Sand all pieces smooth
- Paint character and puzzle frame separately
- Reassemble — the waste becomes the puzzle
Layered Bird Mobile
Stack-cut an entire flock of birds from thin plywood — every bird comes out identical. Paint each one a different color and hang them at varying heights from a driftwood branch to create a kinetic mobile.
- Design a simple bird silhouette on 1/8″ or 1/4″ plywood
- Stack 6–10 sheets with double-sided tape
- Cut all layers at once — entire flock in one pass
- Separate, sand, paint each bird uniquely
- Drill small hole at balance point of each bird
- Tie to branch with varied string lengths
Imaginary Creature
Invent a creature that doesn't exist — dragon, space octopus, crystal deer — and engineer how to build it from multiple bandsaw-cut pieces that assemble together. The design challenge is as important as the cutting.
- Sketch your creature in detail, plan which parts are separate
- Plan joints: tabs-and-slots, dowels, or glued overlaps
- Cut each body part from appropriate thickness stock
- Use 1/8″ blade for fine details (claws, spines, fins)
- Dry-fit all pieces before gluing
- Finish with carving, burning, painting, and sealing
Class Aquarium Display
Every student cuts and paints their own sea creature, then the whole class assembles them into a giant aquarium mural on the wall. A collaborative project that makes the whole classroom come alive.
- Each student designs one unique sea creature
- Cut creature from 1/2″ plywood
- Paint with acrylic — details, patterns, personality
- Add googly eyes, yarn, glitter, or other embellishments
- Teacher arranges on a painted blue backdrop
- Add seaweed, coral, and bubbles cut from thin ply

Sketch Your Idea Before You Cut
Great bandsaw work starts with a great pattern. Use the canvas below to sketch your design. Think about where your relief cuts will go and which curves are tightest. Draw on paper first, then trace it onto your wood.

08 — Finishing Your Work
From Cut to Completed Piece
Cutting is only half the work. Great bandsaw projects shine after careful finishing — sanding, shaping, and applying a surface treatment that protects and beautifies the wood.
Rasping & Filing
A rasp is a coarse file that removes material quickly. Use it to round sharp bandsaw edges, refine curves, and give sculptures a hand-shaped feel. Always rasp across the grain, then with it.
Sanding Sequence
Start with 80 grit to remove rasp marks, then 120, then 220, then 320 for a glass-smooth finish. Never skip grits — each one removes scratches from the one before it.
Sealing Before Paint
Apply a coat of wood sealer or diluted PVA glue before painting. This closes the grain, prevents the first coat of paint from soaking in unevenly, and gives a more professional result.
Acrylic Paints
Acrylic paints are ideal for school woodworking. They're water-soluble when wet, fast-drying, and available in any color. Build up in thin coats — three thin coats always beat one thick one.
Sealing & Varnishing
After painting, seal with a clear coat (spray lacquer or brush-on Mod Podge) to protect the paint and give your piece a finished, professional look. Matte for natural, glossy for bright and fun.
Wood Burning (Pyrography)
A wood-burning pen lets you add texture, scales, fur, feathers, and outlines directly into the wood surface. Burn before painting for best results. Always burn in a ventilated area.
